Sustran Big Pedal Event

Bike, Scoot or Walk to School (19th—30th April)

Get set… we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal 2021, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 19 April to 30 April. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child to take active journeys to school on as many days as possible during the event, and join them on their way.

Or, if your child is learning from home (self isolating), encourage them to do physical activity at home on as many days as possible instead.

Tell us what you’ve done at home

If your child is taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal from home, you can let us know if they have completed a physical    activity by emailing our admin office by 8.00am the next day. We need to log all journeys by 9.00am for entry into the daily prize draw.

Please use this communication channel to let us know if other family members (including parents and siblings not at the school) have joined in as supporter activity counts in the competition too.

Why we are taking part

Sustrans Big Pedal is a great way to get children active, which is important for physical health and mental wellbeing.

Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. Covid-19 has made active travel to school  even more important. The Department for Education have said encouraging active travel to school helps “to enable pupils to be physically  active while encouraging physical distancing.” Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!

Cycle, walk, scoot and snap to win family prizes

You and your family can also win prizes during Sustrans Big Pedal. Simply post a photo of you and your child cycling, walking, wheeling or scooting to school on social media during the challenge using #BigPedalWin.

Bike and Scooter Storage

We will be using the rear playground for additional bike and scooter storage during the Sustrans Event . If the racks at the front of the school are full please wheel (do not ride or scoot) your bike or scooter to the rear playground and store it safely in the quiet area (The small fenced area to the left of the Hall). They can be collected and wheeled down the driveway one way system at the end of the school day.

We had hoped to have more bike and scooter racks installed for this event but our bid to Havant Planning Team is still being considered  - Watch this space!

Recording your child’s journeys

Class teachers will be recording your child’s mode of travel daily throughout this event at morning registration.

We will also be rewarding pupils who take part by giving out healthy rewards on Friday 30th April  (the last day of this event).  Waitrose in Havant have generously donated some items for participating pupils and we would like to say a very BIG THANK YOU to them  for donating  towards this event.

Amazing Me Fundraising Day—Friday 30th April

On Friday 30 April we’d love our pupils to wear Sports clothes /non-uniform in exchange for a £1 donation to raise funds for a new bike storage area. We want to celebrate how amazing the children have been, taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal and learning about the amazing benefits of active travel.
